spiritual leader offering any words of comfort they could. president obama spoke as well and said that we as a nation are simply not doing enough to keep our children safe. he promised to work, to put an end to future tragedies like this one. we'll play you his call for action shortly. but we don't want to focus on the killer. for the last several days we haven't said his name. i don't want history to remember him. we and the people here want you to remember the teachers and childrens and those whose lives have been so unfortunately taken. people with hopes, dreams and stories. even though 20 of those stories had just begun. we're learning more about their lives from parents and friends and local and national papers and local blogs. if you remember after the shooting in aurora, there was a vigil in aurora colorado. every time somebody's name was read, the crowd said back, we will remember, with that in mind tonight, i thought we'd just take a few moments to review the names of each and every fallen child and every grown-up and tell you what we can about their lives. charlotte baco

took the bait. they delivered a counter proposal to president obama's plan to avert the fiscal cliff. guess what, the white house rejected it, calling the gop proposal unbalanced and not serious. translation? no tax hikes on the wealthy so democrats said forget about it. we thought you should take a look. it totals $2.2 trillion in deficit reduction over ten years. the part that stood out to us was $600 billion in proposed savings in medicare reforms. how? in part by raising the age of eligibility to 65 to maybe 67. turning down the gop proposal, dan pfieffer said, quote, it provides no details on which deductions they would eliminate, which loopholes they will close or which medicare savings they would achieve." let's head now to the white house and dan lothian. the white house will not offer a counter proposal, right? what's going on here? >> reporter: well, you know, i think the white house is digging in. the president said early on in this process that he would only sit down and really move forward, negotiate on this in any meaningful way if the tax hikes for the wealthy expired.

. president obama tufrd compromise on boehner's idea to raise taxes on people making $1 million or more a year. the president proposed raising taxes on family making more than $250,000 a year. dan lothian is at the white house. this is good, right? >> reporter: well it's certainly significant because as you pointed out the president for quite some time had been campaigning on the issue saying taxes had to go up on house holds making more than $250,000 during these negotiations over the last several weeks, both the president and other aids here at the white house had been insisting there would be no deal unless taxes went up on those making more than 250,000 and now the president according to source sources laying out the proposal to raise it to 400,000. it is significant, not what republicans really want. they don't want taxes going up on anyone. they want the tax breaks to continue for all americans because they believe this could have an adverse effect on the economy, could impact the job creators. in addition the president made another concession rather offering up $1.2 trillion

republicans have. the president obama's proposals have been anything but balanced. he wants far more in tax hikes than spending cuts and instead of beginning to solve our did you tell probledebt problem, he new stimulus spending and the ability to raise the debt limit whenever he wants without any cuts or reforms. it's clear that the president's just not serious about cutting spending. but spending is the problem. how big a problem? look at this chart put together by paul ryan and budget committee. this line is the current baseline for revenue. here if the president got everything he wanted, over $1.4 trillion in taxes, this is what that would represent. but if you look at the spending problem, you see it does nothing. nothing to solve the spending problem that our country has. republicans want to solve this problem by getting the spending line down. the president wants to pretend spending isn't the problem. that's why we don't have an agreement. the chart depicts what i've been saying for a long time now. washington has a spending problem that can't be fixed with tax increases

obama has a great affinity for ambassador rice. you can see that when he talks about her. he came to her defense in the last month quite a bit but i think there was a lot of concern about the timing and whether this was a fight that he wanted to have. he had said in his first, in his press conference following his re-election that if he thought she was the best person for the job, that he would nominate her but he went on to not pin himself in, not to make a decision, and some of the critics who were in the corner of susan rice say this may have actually sealed her fate. she ended up heading up to capitol hill trying to defend herself against her role immediately following what happened in benghazi and trying to explain that on behalf of the administration. when she went up to capitol hill to meet with lawmakers the visits backfired. they raised a lot of questions and she was there to try to answer them and try to assuage concerns, that was true with senator susan hollins of maine, a republican but a moderate and that was seen as very troubling in all of this process. some critic
